Haiti Legal Clerk Investigating President’s Murder Is Killed

A Haitian lawful clerk assisting examine the assassination of the country’s president was murdered, his union and colleagues stated Thursday, marking a violent change for authorities pursuing the case.

Ernst Lafortune, a clerk operating for a tribunal in the country’s capital of Port-au-Prince, had an night assembly with his superior, Mathieu Chanlatte, a judge investigating the murder of President Jovenel Moïse, the National Association of Haitian Legal Clerks stated in a statement. The two had a “lively dialogue,” the union stated.

Several hours later, Mr. Lafortune was dropped off by unknown persons at a medical center with damaged arms and a gash in his throat, stated one more lawful clerk operating with him. At the medical center, Mr. Lafortune was pronounced dead, leaving at the rear of a spouse and at minimum two small children, the clerk stated.
